A tragic crash involving an SUV and a Honda hatchback on I-95 near New Smyrna Beach has claimed the lives of two women from Virginia who are believed to be mother and daughter.
The crash occurred on April 13, just before 9:30 a.m. Both vehicles were headed north on I-95 when the SUV, occupied by the women from Virginia, drifted into the left lane. The other vehicle swerved to avoid striking the SUV, but overcorrected and hit the SUV’s left rear area. That caused the SUV to roll several times, ejecting both women in the process. According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, neither woman was wearing a seat belt.
There were two other passengers in the SUV that were transported to the hospital, including a child. Neither was seriously injured.
The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and a passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. According to witnesses, one of the victims of the crash was flown by helicopter.
In Flagler and Volusia counties this year, there have been a total of four fatal crashes, including this one. In all, five people have died.
The accident also affected those who drove up on it. The 911 call center received many frantic calls about a child crawling out of the wrecked SUV, with one caller telling the operator that he was hurt. The operator tired to ask how old the child appeared to be, but said that the caller was interrupted by a man who had looked inside the vehicles. He apparently told the caller that there were fatalities, as she told the operator, “Oh my God. Someone’s dead.”
