A busy stretch of road in Marion County has seen yet another car accident. Local residents say that Southeast 183rd Avenue Road should be called “Daytona 500” because they see crashes on the four-mile stretch at least once a month. This time, a teenager died.
Locals say that people speed on the roadway all the time, and sometimes they see cars traveling at speeds that must be 90 miles per hour. In this case, police have yet to determine if speed was a factor in the single-car collision.
Marion County Fire Rescue received notification of the collision at approximately 5:20 p.m. last Wednesday. State Troopers say that the driver of the vehicle was a 17-year-old male, and the passenger was a 16-year-old male. They were heading northbound when the car veered off and out of control. They exited the roadway and struck a tree.
Paramedics and firefighters rushed to the scene as quickly as possible. One of the victims was found dead at the accident site at 5:37 p.m. The other victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
State troopers are continuing their investigations. They have yet to determine if speed or wet weather were the cause of the driver losing control. Neighbors suspect that speed and distracted driving due to cell phones might have been the cause, but theories will not become clearer until after police have completed their investigations.
Police investigations are crucial following any fatal car accident. The facts and evidence revealed by these investigations may play a pivotal role in the ability of family members to pursue wrongful death claims relating to the incident. If it is revealed that a driver’s negligence or unlawfulness was the cause of a fatality, family members of the deceased may have viable claims to pursue financial damages in civil court.
