“Biketoberfest” 2018 will soon be here, so it’s not too early to start planning your trip to Florida if you want to attend.
It’s also not too early to brush up on the rules that motorcyclists need to follow to be safe, especially during large events where the traffic is congested. Nothing can ruin your holiday at Biketoberfest like an accident.
Refresh yourself on some of the most important safety tips that motorcyclists need to remember.
Wear protective equipment
You cannot operate a motorcycle in Florida unless you are wearing protective eye coverings. Furthermore, you need to make certain that your gear is approved by the Department of Transportation. In addition, helmets are required unless you are over 21 years of age and have insurance that will cover at least $10,000 in medical bills if you are injured.
Generally speaking, it’s much safer to stick with the helmet, not the insurance. Head injuries are some of the most serious injuries a rider can suffer, and modern helmets that are properly fitted do a good job of providing some protection against the road in an accident.
Dress to be seen
It’s been proven over and over again that drivers in passenger vehicles just don’t see motorcyclists. It’s not your imagination. Even though Biketoberfest makes motorcyclists more visible than usual, especially if you’re traveling in groups, take pains to make yourself extra visible. Skip the black clothing and opt for bright clothing and neon gear when possible. Use reflective tape on your helmet, back and bike for extra visibility at night.
Ride with people you trust
Try to ride with a few people that you know and trust. You don’t want to share a lane with a motorcyclist who has had a few drinks before getting on the road or someone who just can’t handle their bike very well. Pick your traveling companions carefully and watch their riding style when you do.
Despite your best efforts, accidents may still happen. If you’re injured by a car or another motorcyclist due to the other driver’s carelessness, you may be able to recover your losses through a personal injury claim.
